Sensing Global China through Macau

Abstract

This book chapter reflects on a gender-focused collage exercise undertaken with Portuguese-speaking African students and the first ‘Global China and China-Africa Relations’ course at the University of Macau. I develop three main ideas. First, it is vital to ‘think Africa’ globally, to embrace a global critique of contemporality with African/ist contributions and to centre African developments and futures in China-Africa teaching. Second, professors of the social sciences ought to give careful attention to space, place, territoriality, gender and identity when they design their curricula. Third, researchers are called on to examine the intricate politics of student mobility and ponder the incorporation of diverse African visuals and visualizations in Global China.
